24 September
Attended a performance of the Atlanta Symphony last
night with the new director - Robert Spano. Brahms Haydn Variations, Piano
Concerto 2 with Emmanuel Ax, and Witold Lutoslawsky's Concerto for Orchestra.
The event began at 7:00 with a concert preview of the Haydn Variations in the
form of a piano duo with Spano and Ax - quite a lot of music to be responsible
for.
Me and my date, a lovely young lady from Spain, decided to
skip the preview and instead have dinner at my favorite tai restaurant,
Tamarind.
The performance was spectacular. Spano conducted with amazing verve and passion, and seemed to really enjoy himself. I am very optimistic about his leadership, and hope he will be able to program American music, as is his want.
Tomorrow begins fall quarter at Emory University.
