Tour & New Guitars
October 12th, 2009Brand new Darren Hippner Guitars - obtained last week.
I have given four concerts with my new guitars - one is a German spruce top with Brazilian rosewood backs and sides; the other is
a cedar top with Indian rosewood for the backs and sides.
The Spruce top instrument has a very clear sound and is used for the first half of the concert, in which I perform several pieces by Baroque composers.
This clarity is conducive to polyphonic music such as the Bach Lute Suite and the Sarabande and Variations by Handel, as all of the
independent voices can be heard.
For the second half of the program, I use the cedar top, which contains sound qualities such as warmth and sweetness.
This dark, sultry sound quality is great for Romantic, Brazilian, Spanish and Russian music. Please see me program - which can be found
on the press kit link.
This is the first time I have ever given concerts with the agenda of matching instruments with repertoire, and it seems to be very effective.
I feel that it gets the audience involved, and I always want to hear their feedback after the concert as to which instrument they prefer.
Right now I am in Milwaukee, WI staying with family. I have today off, and will spend it practicing. Tomorrow I perform in Lisle, IL - just outside of
Chicago.
The tour is going very well and the new instruments are a joy to play!!!
